If you have been using OpenLaszlo in the past you will know that the platform originally started out with one runtime for OpenLaszlo application: Flash. Back in 2004, when OpenLaszlo was open sourced, it was Macromedia and Flash 6, later 7, 8 – and finally Adobe FLash 9 and 10. Laszlo started building some very first demos in the early company years, like the Laszlo Dashboard – which was first announced in late 2003.
For the time back then, the Laszlo Dashboard was really impressive, and showed many of the features that made Flash one of the most innovative web technologies: Audio (MP3) and video playback, windows within the browser which could be dragged around, tabslider components, real-time chat. All running in the Flash Player, the only technology to provide an identical cross-browser experience to the majority of your users. As David Temkin, Laszlo founder and former CTO, put it in this blog post on Flash, Laszlo and XML :
Only the latest improvements in browser runtimes have made it possible to reproduce the features of the Laszlo Dashboard with HTML5, but some of the advanced realtime and communication features of Flash like video chat, microphone access, P2P communication cannot be done with even the latest browsers and HTML5. With the old versions of the Flash Player back in 2003/2004, the performance of large app was very, very slow compared to later version like Flash 7, not to talk of the dramatic increase with of performance with the AVM2 and ActionScript3 in Flash Player 9. But Laszlo never planned for OpenLaszlo to only support one runtime, as David Temkin stated as early as 2004:...|
