This month hosts the European Week for Waste Reduction, so I’ll be helping you with ways that you can reduce the amount of waste that is created. By trying out some of the tips below you’ll be helping the environment, save waste going to landfill and you could also save money by choosing less packaged items and using up leftovers. With household waste doubling in weight in the last 40 years, growing steadily at a rate of 1 to 2% per year in the EU Member States, you can now do your bit to help reverse this trend.
So what can you do? Let’s start at the shops. Plan ahead for meal times and make a shopping list and buy only what you need to avoid waste. Remember to bring reusable bags, you could even reuse smaller bags for loose vegetables. Local shops often sell goods with less packaging; visit your local green grocers, butchers or bakers, if your item is packaged can the packaging be recycled? Some items such as yoghurt pots, meat trays, crisp packets and pasta bags can not be recycled. However you could buy in bulk to reduce the packaging; one large container is better than lots of small ones.
