An innovation by Super Micro Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ:SMCI) handles 2,880 CPU cores per 42U server rack. The new TwinBlade, announced the server development company, is optimized for the 12-core AMD Opteron™ 6100 Series. The CEO and president of Supermicro, Charles Liang, revealed that these new server’s Twin architecture “not only doubles the number of nodes in a single blade enclosure but also improves the performance-per-watt, providing an excellent solution for datacenter, cloud computing and HPC applications.”
According to the developers, this system features a power supply efficiency of 94 percent and is coupled with a necessarily outstanding cooling system. Each 7U enclosure of the 42U TwinBlade doubles the number of compute nodes to 20. This effectively increases the number of dual processors which bring the total to 2,880 when an Opteron™ 6100 12-core processor, AMD’ latest series of processors, is used. Other features of this new offering are dual 40Gb/s InfiniBand switches, 240 SATA hard drives, and a DDR3 memory of 15TB (Terabytes).
