As a retail IT professional, I recieved my copy of Windows 7 Ultimate today. I tried twice to install to no avail. The first time it hung it hung right after the reboot, at 21% expanding files. The second time it went a little farther. Both times (I think, for sure it was the second time) the message was that it could not write to the registry. The install cancels and reverts the system back to Vista.

Facts: Ultimately, this problem was because I was installing on a “BACKUP” Drive. Even though I thought the drive was a duplicate of the original, it was created with backup software, which in actuality used something like a Ghost image. When an ghost image is created, not all the files are copied… the image is a fully working image, but cannot be upgraded.

To resolve the problem to even do a Full install, I had to use the REPAIR on the disk. I did a REGISTRY repair, and then was able to do a custom install… unfortunately I did not try at that time to do the upgrade, I would have liked to know if that worked.
