If there’s one constant in computing, it’s that programs and hardware continually evolve, adding features and capabilities. One of the inevitable downsides to this is the (often) lack of forward compatibility. New programs typically require new file formats to store the new-fangled content that is created, often making obsolete previous versions of software. Fortunately, most manufacturers include backwards compatibility, allowing new programs to open up older documents which can then be saved into the newer, often more efficient format.
While I’m old enough to remember the days of DOS and WordPerfect, today’s consumers are typically writing up their documents in some form of Microsoft Office or Sun’s free OpenOffice . Despite my technological background, very often, I’m of the mindset “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” which led me not to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007 until sometime in 2008, citing the lack of need for its new features and my laziness to learn the “ribbon”.
