A Beta Version is a trail version that will run for a while. Sooner or later, the beta will stop working unless you agree to purchase the license for it. However, there is no obligation on your part to purchase it.
Its a great way for people to try out there office program to see if you like it and to report things that you do like about it.
When Microsoft was working on Windows 7, they offered many people the chance to download and try it out for almost a full year.
