Network topology and Active Directory Preparation

Hello again

In the first part, I talked about what the OCS is, what we can do with OCS and what are the components of OCS infrastructure. I also tried to explain what the Planning Tool is (which can be used before OCS implementation in production environment). In this part, I will start to build an OCS infrastructure on an example scenario. So lets begin :)

As you remember I talked about the features that I want for my OCS scenario in the first part. These are instant messaging, file transfer, desktop sharing and archiving of the messages. Therefore, when we input these necessities to the Planning Tool wizard for 10000 users, it appeared that we need one Front-end server (the server that will serve for instant messaging, presence, file transfer and desktop sharing), one Archiving server (the server that will write all the instant messaging conversations to SQL database) and two SQL servers (one of them is back-end database server and the other is for archiving purpose) in our OCS infrastructure. I will do one of the SQL installations on Archive Server so three separate servers will meet my requirements. But for an OCS production environment to be completed, there must be other roles already have been installed in the environment. These are Domain Controller, Certificate Authority Server and File Server. Before going into detail for OCS installation, you may want to look at the articles http://www.ipsure.com/blog/2010/exchange-2010-organization-from-scratch/ and http://www.ipsure.com/blog/2010/installation-and-configuration-of-active-directory-certificate-services-on-windows-server-2008-r2-1/ for DC and CA server installations respectively.
