Adding .shp to .shx contents - Autodesk Discussion Groups

For someone familiar with CAD .shp and .shx files, this will be an easy one . . .

 

I'm trying to "insert" a newly created shape file (.shp) into an existing compiled file (.shx).  I type SHAPE, then ?, then *, and I see in the text window a list of all loaded .shx files, and that one of these, ltypeshp.shx, contains a few shapes (track1, box, bat, zig, circ1, amzigzag).  Well, I can type SHAPE and input one of these, or MKSHAPE to make a new shape (although I'm confused as to why there is a dialog prompt to select an existing .shp before a command line prompt to name the new .shp).

 

Anyway, I can get to where I see the ltypeshp.shx and its contents, as well as a new .shx that I've compiled containing a single .shp file with the same name.  But how do I go about placing this second .shp in the first .shx?  I'd like to place all future .shp's in a single .shx.

Actually, I'm trying to add shapes to the single default .shx file that contains all the shapes that are referenced in the acad.lin file linetype descriptions.  Since you mentioned it, I DID copy a linetype description in the acad.lin file, but the symbol I'd like to use instead of the original one is the new shape I'm trying to get into the ltypeshp.shx file.  Using shapes instead of blocks is more efficient and will decrease processing time, so I'd like to become proficient with using them (especially with the GIS world slowly creeeeeping into the CAD realm).
