With a new version of Microsoft Office comes a new version of Microsoft Word. This latest release of the world’s most popular word processing application comes with a brand new ribbon, not to mention some tweaks to the document styling tools seen in Word 2007.

Microsoft Word 2010 provides plenty of options for styling text and formatting of a document, from the presets provided in the ribbon to allowing you to configure your own.

If you’re upgrading from Office 2003 or earlier, the Styles section of the Microsoft Word 2010 “ribbon” (Microsoft’s term for the menu across the top of the application window) will probably seem completely alien to you – but it is surprisingly easy to use.

Quick Styles Explained

The idea behind the Microsoft Word 2010 styles is that they can be quickly applied. You don’t even need to change the style to see how it will look as Word will give you a quick preview of the change, which can be applied by selecting a few words with the mouse. A full paragraph can be styled without selecting the text first, and this is just the tip of the iceberg – the Styles menu is extremely powerful and can deliver astonishing results.
